In Season: July to August

When shopping for blackberries at Market, look for plump, firm berries that are completely black.  Unlike some other berries, blackberries will not ripen further once picked. They also only last for a couple of days in the fridge, so be sure to have a plan for them when you get them home. Blackberries are delicious raw (of course!), make great jam and freeze beautifully. To freeze, simply place berries in a single layer on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Once frozen, place berries in a zip lock bag, in the freezer, where they will keep for up to a year.

Blackberries have been touted as one of the highest of all foods in antioxidants and are commonly referd to as a "superfood". Blackberries are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They are also a good source of dietary fiber, and a very good source of vitamin C, vitamin K and manganese.
