In Season: July to August
Peaches come into season in July in Ontario. Midsummer, their lovely sweet flavour and juiciness are a treat. Although peaches have a hard time growing right around Kingston, close by Prince Edward County has a few small orchards and of course there is Niagara - where most Ontario peaches are grown. Be sure to ask your market vendor where the peaches came from. Ripe peaches are great on their own or simply paired with vanilla ice cream however, they can also be used in savoury dishes. Our peach salsa recipe is a great example. Look for peaches that are firm but yield slightly to a thumb print.
Store peaches at room temperature with good air circulation. Be sure to look through your peaches when you get home - what they say about apples is the same for peaches - one bad peach can ruin the bunch!
Peaches are very low in Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Sodium. They are also a good source of Dietary Fibre, Vitamin A, Niacin and Potassium, and a very good source of Vitamin C.
